Who uses Kotahi
Kotahi is in production with organisations running quite different publishing models. A few are documented here; more are in progress.
MetaROR
Section titled “MetaROR”metaror.org — a project of the Research on Research Institute (RoRI), focused on meta-research and research evaluation.
MetaROR runs a Publish-Review-Curate model. eLife Pathways hosts and manages the full technical infrastructure.
Kotahi provides:

- DOI registration

Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health
Section titled “Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health”Two projects, run by the same team.
Bat-Com
Section titled “Bat-Com”bat-com.org — a research group at the Bloomberg School curating and assessing historical and emerging research on bat virus spillover events, organised by viral family.
Kotahi manages triage and review management for the group’s assessments.
Novel Coronavirus Research Compendium
Section titled “Novel Coronavirus Research Compendium”ncrc.jhsph.edu — the same team’s earlier project, evaluating and summarising key COVID-19 research during the pandemic.
The NCRC team had been managing a high volume of pandemic preprints in spreadsheets. They moved to Kotahi for triage and review management.
Kotahi provided:
- automated import of metadata from bioRxiv and PubMed
- assisted preprint search
- a triage workflow
- review management
- export to spreadsheets
At the time, NCRC published to WordPress via those spreadsheets.
iPlaces Alliance
Section titled “iPlaces Alliance”iplacesalliance.org — place-based scholarly infrastructure, incubated at UC Berkeley’s Gump South Pacific Research Station and developed by Metadata Game Changers with National Science Foundation funding.
iPlaces lets field stations publish the research they make possible — project records, course collections, conference proceedings, sampling plans — as citable outputs with DOIs registered through DataCite. Each station sets its own review criteria, which may be scientific, legal, permitting or cultural, and station directors assign the reviewers.
iPlaces host and develop their own deployment, and have extended the public-website layer for their own needs.
Psicológica
Section titled “Psicológica”psicologicajournal.com — the flagship journal of the Spanish Society for Experimental Psychology (SEPEX), running a Diamond Open Access overlay model since 2022.
Its manuscripts, data, software and peer reviews are deposited in DIGITAL.CSIC, the Spanish National Research Council’s repository, which mints the DOI once an editor accepts the paper. Kotahi runs their review process.
Lifecycle Journal
Section titled “Lifecycle Journal”lifecyclejournal.org — a Center for Open Science pilot project that evaluates research across the whole research lifecycle rather than at the single point of publication, with community evaluators assessing work from several perspectives.
Kotahi runs the whole process for them: document editing, PDF generation, peer review administration, publication, and the public website.
This pilot is currently closed to new submissions.
Others
Section titled “Others”Kotahi is also used by eLife itself, as an extension to its existing platform for Publish-Review-Curate, and by a number of other groups across four service tiers. Individual entitlements vary, so nothing on this page should be read as a description of what any particular customer receives.
